Notes

Alera nodded. "Your suggestions have merit. I will mention them to my father," she said and then smiled, lightly flirtatious again to drive away the suddenly sombre mood, "and I must give you a vial of my perfume before you leave, to make sure you remember me!"

Alera looked up, memorising Mathias' face, and gave him a rather tremulous smile, then slowly drew a ring from her finger, one she always wore. "This was my mother's," she said quietly, placing the delicate bauble in the paladin's hand. "Take it…and remember me."

Winterborn

This is Mathias as he is shown in the 9th plague. The only change I made is his sword. I changed it from Greatsword to Bastardsword because it did not make sense for the man to fight with a two handed sword, but still have a full sized shield. I think the Perc understood the meaning, but we were hung up over semantics.

Mathias de Falco wrote in Common
Thanks for the refresher…it's good to have every now and then…can you save this thread for me in Mathias' character sheet so I can refer to it again as needed?

croiduire(GM) wrote in Common
The god's name is Grolant. His realm is a blighted sphere that is very close to Erdensphere…and the reason that Erdensphere is so turbulent, so often impassable to spelljammers, is because of the defences erected by the gods of Erdensphere to keep him, and related interlopers, out. The verbeeg are of hill giant DNA that has been significantly altered by Grolant and infused with his essence. Forget free will--when it comes to religion, the verbeeg serve him fully and without question.

Hill giants ARE native to Erdensphere. Since they are rooted in Erdensphere they cannot be banished and the ecological consequences of even making it untenable for them to survive on the planet would be disastrous for many other native life forms and therefore untenable for the Erden pantheon. The verbeeg are the advance troops in the war of conquest that Grolant has been patiently waging for several millennia.

Mathias de Falco wrote in Common
Yes, I recall all that, but aside from the Verbeeg, I just don't have a name to associate with the entity we are fighting.

Good thing I asked all this, cause I had written a long post that would have seemed foolish if I hadn't…I'll need to rewrite… blech…

croiduire(GM) wrote in Common
Something Mathias already knows…we're talking about the verbeeg. Remember the pells? Remember all the stories about the constant warfare against them? Remember all the discussion of the horrors they perpetrate? Remember how they are a common enemy even to such very different cultures as the Trewschan Confederation and Caldorne?

Mathias de Falco wrote in Common
I recall something of that nature, but I can't say I really made the connection. Sometimes these 'dots' of information just come too far apart in real time for me to see how they connect.

Does this evil deity and its hellspawn children have names? I do not recall this either.

And finally, is Calabash telling Mathias that the artefact is in the hands of this evil, or was this something Mathias should have already known as well?

croiduire(GM) wrote in Common
OOC: Common knowledge. At several points it has been pointed out that the verbeeg are evil, are not native to Erdensphere, and do not worship the deities of Erden's pantheon. I have tried to incorporate this awareness even into the fabric of the culture, make it ubiquitous, something 'everyone knows'. For example, do you recall the suspicion when Mathias and Zaine tried to buy their Holy Symbols, and the doubt that an off-world deity was benign?

Mathias de Falco wrote in Common
OOC--"You go to face the spawn of a god as evil as Raziel Mallaithe and as strong in his iniquity, a god that the powerful and benign deities of this sphere have not been able to crush despite aeons of conflict."

Is this some new revelation we had not known about till this moment, or was there some mention and discussion about this deity and it's evil spawn in an earlier post that I can't remember?

Calabash wrote in Common
The answer came slowly and reluctantly, but the words were clear. "My paladin, you go to battle for possession of an artefact old when Havensphere was created and substantial in its destruction. You go to face the spawn of a god as evil as Raziel Mallaithe and as strong in his iniquity, a god that the powerful and benign deities of this sphere have not been able to crush despite aeons of conflict.

"Moreover, my daughter…sees imperfectly at this time. She longs for renewal, for the celebration of life--as do we all--and in truth this is a far better solution for the continuation of the journey of a noble soul. But…my Mikkela did not expect a mother to ignore the demands of a child growing within her. She did not imagine that Daeari--unlike a doe or hen--would eschew the sanctuary prepared for her…"

Mathias de Falco wrote in Common
Infused with this sudden sense of unease, Mathias takes hold of his holy symbol. "What is it Father? Should we truly fear for the mother and child? Have I misspoken?"

Calabash wrote in Common
Mathias felt the familiar divine presence, but no words were spoken. In fact, the hair at the back of the paladin's neck prickled with disquietude.

Mathias de Falco wrote in Common
"Father, truly there will be hardships aplenty, yet the mother and child ought be safe within our company. Surely there is some way to allay the sergeant's worst fears and prove to him that having faith is not misplaced. Can you counsel me in this matter?"

In addition to the articles Mathias expected, he found two new shirts, one of finest linen for formal wear, one of warm and durable linsey-woollsey, three pairs of long hosen, two of soft wool, the third of fine, elegant wool-silk, articles to aid his grooming, a set of brushes, and a complete scrivener's set, including a thick, vellum bound journal, blank except for the first page where Alera had written:

My dearheart,
I prithee you fill these pages with your adventures and observations, and with your thoughts and dreams, hopes and sorrows, joys and fears also, for I would share with you in this way, the time we are parted. And, if I do not presume too much, I ask that you mention if perchance now and then you think of me. I have a volume identical to this one, and I will do likewise.
Your loving,
Alera
