Dress Uniform Braies and chainses of remarkably fine-spun linsey-woolsey, bias cut to fit snugly and lay very flat (3 sets). Over that, a shirt of best-quality linen, deeply cuffed almost to the elbow and high collared in black silk-wool lustring (2). Next are black hosen, knitted of silk to stretch smoothly over the legs, gartered just above the knees (3 pr), followed by black breeches, also of the black lustring, that fall straight and buckle just below the knees (2); black shoes of highly polished leather, hard soled and with a 2 inch heel, that close with a silver buckle (1 pr); and a tunic of crimson velvet (2). The sleeves are sewn in and fall straight, but the lower edge is split up for several inches to reveal the shirt cuff beneath, and bound in black silk. It is superbly fitted to the waist, and then bells slightly over the hips, ending just at the upper thigh. The hem too is split on either side, in the same fashion as the sleeves, and the edges likewise bound. Around the waist is clasped a belt of gleaming black leather (1). The tunic's plain front closure is concealed by a triangular front-piece, slightly stiffened, reaching from the shoulders to just below the waist, fastened on with elegant black silk frogs, and in back is a capelet, crimson velvet lined with black silk, the velvet embroidered all over into diamond shapes, and centred within each diamond is the Caldornean eagle, the bear of Heimdall's Gate, or the meteor, symbol of Firefall, the designs worked in black, silver and gold. The finishing touch is the insignia of service, Kingdom badge on the right shoulder, insignia of rank on the left, the two connected by a silver chain (1 insignia set).

1Suddenly shy and tender, Liesel extracted a tiny, exquisite box, a work of art in itself, and lifted the lid. There, on a velvet pad, nestled one inside the other were two rings. Dragorn recognised the intricate puzzle bands that had once been his interlocking Ring of Free Action. With consummate skill they had been reworked, and part taken to form a second, much smaller, ring. Inside each of the remade rings was an inner circlet of rose gold (Liesel's gold nugget) engraved with a subtle pattern of apple blossoms. The interlocking bands passed over the rose gold core of both rings like embracing arms. The final elements were the two rubies he had given her. They had been cut into matching cabochons and polished to show their fiery inner stars, then mounted on the rings. Liesel waited wide eyed and holding her breath for his reaction.

Background & Notes

Liesel held on to Dragorn until her tears threatened to overwhelm her. Trying not to break down, she pulled away and took refuge in activity, struggling to haul the heavy pack that filled one corner of her tiny room into the centre. "It's a good thing I did laundry yesterday," she declared in a quavering voice. "You have your book," she added, touching the fat volume of blank paper that he would use to write to her throughout his journey. "Do you have plenty of ink? I have extra quills--you better take them." She continued her inventory. "Soap. Salve. Witch hazel…Oh, you don't have any sewing supplies…" She turned to rummage in her sewing basket, quickly assembling a paper of pins, four silver needles, and a spool of thread, and then pulling out a pair of a pair of warm woollen hosen, grey with red tops. "And I only finished wu--one pair of socks!" she sobbed, holding them out to him sadly.

Subdual healing with spells: 6/hr

Blackhammer was originally Schwarzhammer; it was translated into Common by one of Dragorn's early employers, and he never bothered trying to change it back.

Dragorn was a member of the Dwarven Elite, and on Haven had dedicated his life to the destruction of The Nameless One, putting nothing before that goal. He loved combat and did not like to use missile weapons, preferring to get "up close and personal" with his opponents. He was exhilarated by the fierce give-and-take, taking a hit and giving a harder one back, to show who the stronger more resilient warrior really was. Only since landing on Erden has he discovered how much more there is to life than warfare.

Dragorn's father was a hard man who made his son run faster, work longer, and fight harder than any other boy in the Clan; if he failed he was subjected to a very harsh "learning" process. However, such harsh methods got results. Dragorn grew up into a skilful craftsman and a deadly warrior. As soon a he was of age, he left home and hasn't looked back, but he is not embittered; he has nothing to prove to his father, only to himself as each day he tries to surpass yesterday's personal best.

Dragorn squared off against three ogres. With a quick flick of his sword one was down and bleeding to death, but undeterred the others stepped forth with their attacks. Dragorn deftly blocked one with his shield whilst ducking under the other's swing. However, the ogres continued to press the fight, and one of them got a nasty hit on Dragorn's right leg. Ignoring his injury he circled, watching for his opening; darting in beneath his larger opponents' guard he took down the second ogre with two quick, deadly slashes, then sprang back, too small and too quick for his dying foe to retaliate. More cautious now, but with eyes of burning hatred, the remaining ogre squared to meet the death-dealer. A flurry of lunge and parry yielded little advantage, no more than glancing blows. After one of these Dragorn smiled at his brutish opponent and said in the ogre's language, "You call that a strike? I will give you your next strike first so you will know that I took your best and still came out on top. Let your soul remember that, as it looks down on your dead body being feasted on by the crows and vultures."

On that final, fateful, rain-soaked day, while the spellcasters prepared to cast and Max began his chant, Dragorn, never one for magic, sat in the library and honed his sword. It wasn't that he wasn't interested in deciphering the map--quite the contrary--but he didn't think his voice was going to make the difference! He figured he might as well do something useful while he waited. When the earth began to shake the dwarf dropped his whetstone and leapt to his feet, sword firmly clutched in his grasp, preparing to face another enemy. First Max and Riva disappeared, and then he himself was pulled through the very fabric of space and time. He faintly heard Sir Poll order, "Get out of here! I'll hold the walls!" and then he was standing on the battlefield, staring into the face of a charging army of orcs and ogres!

Well, I sure chose the wrong morning to leave off my armour! he thought inconsequently, and then the band was upon him. Without his shield he snatched out the hand ax he always wore at his belt to parry the enemies' blows and met the onslaught with a defiant grin. Much more agile without the encumbering plate, and keenly aware of his own vulnerable skin, he dove between the first ogre's legs, slashing…effectively. The ogre fell screaming to the ground, writhing with pain, and Dragorn prepared to meet the next charge. Two ogres set upon him, both fighting with the ferocity of desperation, knowing well the stakes, for Tollossus and the Nameless One could be seen in the centre of the arena, and the power of their conflict shook the earth. Dragon struck and parried, hard pressed by his foes. At one time he thought sure he was done for, when an elven arrow struck one ogre in the throat, ending his attack. The remaining opponent was soon dispatched, and Dragorn had barely turned to meet the next rush when the sky seemed to split asunder.

The blinding flash of Tollossus's final blow filled the world, and his eyes were dazzled for a moment by the light, before the shockwave first threw him backward, then pulled him forward into the void. The sound was a deafening roar. Unseen objects battered him as he tumbled wildly through the air. His sword was wrenched from his grasp and then something large and solid slammed into his left arm, and his axe slipped from his suddenly numb and nerveless fingers. He gasped in pain from the blows of a hundred indifferent sources--the detritus of a vanishing world. Strange energies coursed through his body as the maelstrom buffeted him relentlessly… buckles shattered…straps broke… and some items were simply crushed by the unnatural forces around him…

In the swirling darkness, he sensed, more than he saw, others… other travellers, being swept along much as he was himself. After what seemed an eternity, his awareness of the others faded, one by one, until he was alone in the spinning black. The dark madness seemed to last for aeons, but--after an incredibly long, long time--slowly, the spinning stopped. Dragorn's knees buckled as his weight suddenly asserted itself, and he realized that he was on solid ground once more. A brilliant flash of blue-white light assailed his eyes, and all at once he felt the sweet sensation of falling rain on his exposed skin. The wind tugged at his tattered garments as his eyes adjusted to the lesser darkness that was his new world, and the next flash of lightning revealed a stormy night sky over grass covered hills.

Atop a small rise he spotted a desolate looking barn next to a burned out farmhouse…But wait! What was that, just a few yards away? It looked like a figure of…someone… One of his fellow travellers, perhaps? The person seemed to have suddenly appeared, right before his dazed eyes, where a second before there was nothing. Whoever it was had fallen to the ground, and wasn't moving…
