About The Bells

Heimdall's Gate is kept informed by a complex--and rather noisy--system of bells. The bell-tower is atop the Collegium, and some fairly sophisticated magic is employed to maintain utterly accurate time-keeping. Deep, resonant tones that carry past the city walls announce the canons, one at prime, two at tierce, three at sext, and so forth. This solemn tocsin is the first bell of the canon. Second and third bells peal a half octave higher and ring with the number of the canon, a pause, and then either two or three knells. The quarters sound with a light clear voice, either one, two, or three, a full octave higher than the canon. Vigils begin with matins. Only those awake and listening hear the muffled peal of the seven and eight notes of the night watches.

There are also signals, alarms and announcements, different in pitch and of irregular frequency, which the Havenites are not yet familiar with, that are easily distinguished from the backdrop of timekeeping.
