Background & Notes

Quiv was born in 1878 near the town of Telstrasi in the country of Assel-Vesdra, the third child of Aevalin and Aionia Soth. They were farmers by trade and owned a nice plot of land with fields, pasturage, a small orchard, four strengthy horses to pull plow and wagon and sleigh, and a herd of goats for milk and cheese and of sheep for wool and mutton.

There was plenty to do on a family farm, and as he grew old enough he joined his parents, brother and sister in doing the necessary chores. His father taught all the children how to train and handle animals, but Quiv seemed to have a greater knack for it than either Wellerane or Laureaisse. While he was still in his 40s, Aevalin, noticing his tiny son's talent, arranged for him to regularly spend time with one of his kinsmen, a reclusive trapper who was legendary for his skill as a tracker and for his uncanny rapport with animals.

Quiv proved an apt pupil and almost nothing gave him more pleasure than listening and learning from Great-great-great-uncle Ilon, an elf already old and wise when the Gods were born. It was from him he heard of the baby Goddess, Maruthra. He told of when the fledgling Goddess was 'born' (actually coalesced from the elements--the womb that bore her was the eye of a hurricane that covered Tanalok Bay and adjacent areas within the Nischkar Sea. Her flesh is earth and water, her breath is wind, her esse is fire.) The divine infant was weak--she could not power an orison--and needed protection and nurturing. She also needed reminders (not so much teaching as awakening as to all that had gone before, for as part of Valverus, she knew all that he had known, but she had to be reminded and needed help in sorting out all the myriad shards of uncounted billions of years of memories.) This was the task of the ancient druids of every race who remembered the secrets of the Old Gods, and of other more mysterious creatures, forces, and powers. Ilon had been guide and protector for the elven seer who had made the long, dangerous pilgrimage to teach Maruthra what she needed to know, despite countless assaults from the legacies of the eleven exiled Gods who would have loved to destroy the newborn deity and the future she represented.

Slowly Quiv grew in strength and stature and understanding. Life seemed unchanging, the days melting smoothly into one another in a serene continuum of love, joy and learning. The only unusual element that set the Soth family apart from any other in the village was its size. Nobody had five children in a mere hundred years! It was astonishing. However, Mama was untroubled by any hint of criticism. As it was said in the colloquial terms of the village, Mama had 'the sight'. As she put it with supreme self confidence, "Sometime I just know, without knowing how or why I know. But I've learned to trust my premonitions. I knew before Aevalin and I wed that I needed to hurry and have our babies, and I don't regret it one bit!"

The boy couldn't imagine how life could be different, or better, but soon after he turned 60, he found out. The War that had been smouldering all his life flared into a huge conflagration and his father, along with most of the men of the village, marched south to the fighting. For six long hard years the battles raged, and when the fighting ended Aevalin, and too many others, did not return. He died in Xeront during the battle of Stark Passage, slain by an enemy's arrow.

Life grew harder for the young family then, and much sadder, but they managed. Uncle Ilon kept the stewpot filled and taught all the children how to hunt and trap. Mama's young cousin, Naremsul, still several years short of manhood, but at 150 old and strong enough to farm, moved in with them and became much like another older brother. Mama grieved but didn't brood, and took comfort in her children, wishing she'd been wrong, but vindicated that she'd made the right decision--and all five children knew they were loved and wanted. So it was, the family survived, even thrived, and Quiv did his share to make it happen. He worked hard, and played hard, and as he approached manhood, dreamed of great deeds and splendid adventures. On his hundredth birthday there was a celebration and he was given the family tattoo of a lizard on his left arm, a symbol of his coming of age--not yet a man, but no longer a child.

Family Notes

The Soths were all of average height and build--typically elven, one would say, with every one tan and well formed, keen eyed and fleet of foot. Cuanna was the darkest, with melting brown eyes and mahogany coloured hair that only caught fire in bright sunlight, Wellerane the fairest with eyes a pure malachite and hair like ripe corn. Laureaisse, Quivalin and Taobon fell in the middle, with hazel eyes and hair betwixt russet and sorrel. Blond, grey-eyed Cousin Sully was more impressively muscled than average and a bit taller…but he took after his father's side of the family.
